Photos of Duntulm Castle

Duntulm Castle by djwtwo

Ruins of the 15th century Duntulm Castle on the Trotternish Peninsula on the Isle of Skye, perched on the cliffs above the ocean. During the 17th century this was the seat of the Clan MacDonald of Sleat, although for much of the castle’s early existence the land was fought over by the MacLeods and MacDonalds, with the castle changing hands several times. The ruin is in very poor shape, and is fenced off as the structure and the cliff that supports it are both something less than stable. It’s surrounded by sheep pasture and stunning views of the ocean, the western islands, and inland towards the Quiraing. My first stab at this was an HDR composite from a quick-bracketed burst, but it went a bit too far into the unreal. My “correct” exposure actually had good dynamic range all by itself, so I redid things based just on that shot and I’m much more pleased with the result. Nikon D7000 w/Tokina 11-16mm @ 11mm, 1/250s @ ƒ/8, ISO100. Corrected the wide-angle distortion in Photoshop, with color finishing in Aperture and Nik Viveza.
